Academic scholarships

Each country and/or university offers a range of financial support and scholarships for which various students may be eligible.

Industry scholarships

In cooperation with industry partners a variety of scholarships can be offered on a competitive basis. Students seeking scholarships should mark the appropriate boxes on the application form.

Comprehensive scholarships

Several industry scholarships covering the tuition fees for EU/EFTA and non-EU/EFTA students plus approx. €9000/year, are available through donation by Shell.

For obtaining a comprehensive scholarship  the Scholarship application form must be submitted with the regular MSc programme application. Selection of recipients is based on previous performance and motivation. Preference will be given to outstanding international students.

Tuition scholarships

RWTH Aachen and the IDEA-League developed a joint scholarship program as contribution towards the tuition fees and the cost of living, particularly for students from EU or EFTA countries in the JOINT Master Program “Applied Geophysics”. Scholarships are awarded competitively to students with superior course achievement in their prior academic studies. Currently, 2 tuition scholarships are available, based on donations by Wintershall to RWTH Aachen University.



The total sum 7 600 € of a tuition scholarship is paid out in monthly rates of 300 € plus an initial lump sum of 400 €. It is composed of approximately equal amounts of 4 000 € donated by our sponsors and  3 600 € from the RWTH Education Fund /Deutschlandstipendium. Additionally, the scholarship receipients are entitled to participate in a general social program for the entire duration of their scholarship.

  • Information on previous academic degrees and grades
  • a short letter motivating the academic program chosen
